22-Year-Old Recent Grad Enters Politics to Make Changes

22-year old recent Stanford grad Michael Tubbs wants to help the city of Stockton, CA. Stockton is a seriously troubled city. Even before the recession its economy was rough, but the recession exploded unemployment there and brought the city to bankruptcy. So Tubbs is running for City Council to see what he can do to set the city straight.

Why would a recent grad want to jump into a serious leadership position? Tubbs was raised in the City Council district and went to local schools, he says, and the city’s troubles have hit his friends and family. So the work he’d be doing as councilman would be personal. “Right now in Stockton there’s a lot of things that are considered normal that are dysfunctional, a lot of things considered dysfunctional that are normal.”

Tubbs shared his insights about why he thinks the youth are especially important to political change. “For anything to move in the country it takes young people because we don’t have nothing to lose yet. We don’t have careers, we don’t have jobs, we just have time and energy and that’s important to make change.”
